The nineteenth adventure of Abigail.

Abigail the Church mouse was very sad. A big argument had been going on ever since the time last month when Snuffles the hedgehog had stuck Squawker the magpie with some of her sharp needles. Neither of them would talk to the other at all. Whenever Abi tried to talk to Snuffles, the hedgehog angrily curled up into a tight prickly little ball.

Talking to Squawker was even worse. All he did was chatter on and on about the painful prickles and about how he wasn't going to come anywhere near the Church "if that kind of thing was going to go on".

Abigail was getting worried. She felt that she should be able to help both of her friends, but she couldn't think what to do. Harold the vole, (who hated arguments) had stopped coming into the Church all, so she knew he must be sad as well.

Whenever Abigail didn't know what to do, she would go for a long walk and think very, very hard. This time she walked and walked, and thought and thought, and quite forgot what time it was. It was only when she gave a great big yawn that she looked up and realised how late it was! Everywhere was dark, but she could just see the bottom of the Church tower.

"Now there's an idea!" thought Abigail. "I wonder what the Owl would think of all this? He's very, very clever. I'm sure he would know what to do".

And so, quick as a flash, Abigail climbed up the Church tower to the little room where the Owl lived. He was waiting for her at the top, sitting on the little perch Abi had made, and looking very, very wise.

"Greetings, Church mouse" the Owl said.

"Oh." said Abigail, rather taken aback. "Err, hello Owl. I have a little problem and I was hoping you could give me some advice".

"Tell me your troubles,” said the Owl.

So Abigail told the Owl all that had happened, how Squawker had played a joke on Snuffles, and how she had got upset, and stuck with some of her sharp quills, and about how everyone was so upset. The Owl listened carefully, then turned around twice on the perch.

"Snuffles IS very serious. She gets upset very easily,” said the Owl.

"So you think this is all her fault?" said Abi.

"Not at all. It's just that some people look down on other people who happen to take things very seriously".

Well Abi could think of someone like that straight away! "Squawker!" she breathed. "So you think it's his fault?"

The Owl shifted again. "Not at all. Some people find it very easy to tell people who do things differently off".

Abigail thought. Snuffles liked everything to be the same all the time. When Abi had moved out of her Great-Uncle Chilblain's little house a few months ago Snuffles had argued with her for hours and hours and hours.

"So whose fault is it?" she said at last.

Now Owls do not have eyes that blink. Not ever. The Owl sat and stared at her until Abi felt quite uncomfortable.
